I love having my life organized digitally. I used to use Evernote, many moons ago–then I switched to Notion. Early last month I finally started moving what I could from Notion to a an app called Capacities. Unfortunately, there is a large part of my digital Second Brain that is still in Notion, though I do plan on slowly moving what I can to Capacities.

What got me to switch was the way Capacities organizes the Daily Note, which I use and love. I use the Daily Note to house the long list of daily To Dos that I want to check off each day. I also keep a ‘daily log’ of my activities throughout the day, as well as a food log. I was keeping both of those in Google Drive, but now I can keep my daily log and food log on my Daily Note along with all the other daily to dos I want and need to keep track of.

Another element I love is that I can link details about my day right in my Daily Note so that the actions I took on a particular day live both in my Daily Note and elsewhere in Capacities (say with my Books or Quotes). Needless to say, the vast majority of people don’t need to track things they way I do, but I both enjoy the tracking and benefit from having the daily reminders to do certain things that I might not always do otherwise (hell, I stiill don’t get all my desired tasks done every day).

The Daily Note also has a spot for other Tasks I need to get done (as distinct from daily to-dos). It also tracks every object I created that day, so any meeting notes or book notes I take that day are automatically connected to that day. Very cool.

The last thing I’ll say about Capacities that I enjoy is that the use objects instead of folders. Objects can be anything and the details for any object type can be customized, including with links to other objects. For instance, if I collect a quote from a book I am reading I can save the quote as Quote object, but link it to the person who wrote it, to the specific book I got it from, and to the broader topic(s) it is connected to.

I have probably between 1 and 2 thousand quotes, books, screenshots, and other snippets I need to move from Notion. It is going to be a slog, but it will also give me an opportunity to review my Second Brain, cull the junk, and get everything connected the way I want it.
